Music has always been a major part of Chenko life. When he was a young boy of 13 years old, living in Laventille Never Dirty Morvant, I used to work with my dad in his music studio call “Real One Production”. I met Kerwin Du Bois, who is a good friend of my dad, who inspired me to build beats on a computer call Reason. That’s when I sang my first Soca song and realized how much I loved to sing. I did my first performance in my secondary school called “Rosemary”. That's where the dream to be an artiste started.
Working with my father I learnt a lot, however when I was 18 years old, due to the crime situation in Laventille, people didn’t want to come to his studio and so the studio had to shut down, but my passion for music did not die with it. I decided to work at other studios like Chris Morris who wrote “cold sweat” for Crazy and Sheldon Nugget, Ancil Harris and live Cambridge also among many of the artiste/producer who assisted in my self-development as a music producer in different music genres such as calypso, hip hop, reggae and a cultural blend of the different genres. 6 years after, I started to save money for my equipment and created my brand “Chenko Production”.
But it has been real struggle. Music alone wasn’t really making money so I had to resort to taking on other jobs. I worked as a security for 4 years while working on my music part time. After that I got to work at National Energy Skills Centre Laventille where I worked for 7 years as a teacher, teaching live sound system and music production. As much as I wanted to do music, I enjoyed teaching young people, especially those in my home town Never Dirty Morvant and Laventille community because I was once in their shoes I know how hard it is to get a good education when there are so many negative influences to go the wrong way of living life.
Now I am a full time producer and now I know I can go all the way to be an artist performing, not just in Trinidad and Tobago but internationally as well. These projects is my next step to achieving that dream. It will also give me the opportunity to help my community Laventille and to guild young people in all forms of music.
